What is Open Floor?
Open Floor is a movement practice rich in resources for being human, guiding us to come home to our bodies and find ease within our own skin. By engaging with these resources on the dance floor, we deepen our resilience in navigating the wild ride of living. The dance floor becomes a playground for understanding our ever-changing needs for solitude, connection, and
community.
This practice helps develop life skills that foster flexibility and resilience, enabling participants to respond creatively to life's challenges both on and off the dance floor.

Classes blend guided exploration with time for personal practice, accompanied by a diverse range of music that inspires everything from wild, expressive movement to quiet, introspective moments.

No experience is required.

The invitation is to come just as you are.
"Movement is our nature, movement is our language, and movement is the medicine we work with on the Open Floor"
~ Lori Saltzman
ABOUT
What to Expect?
Open Floor is a dance and movement practice that is suitable for all ability levels. You are never too old to move. We support people to move in a way that accommodates different energy-levels, injuries or physical disabilities (including chairs for moving on).
Open Floor Movement Classes combines free-form movement and guided explorations, set to inspiring and provocative soundscapes.
In every class we make time for personal practice and open dance.

Every class begins with a warmup where we take time to tend to the needs of our bodies: warming and stretching our muscles and breathing our way into motion. Each class focuses on a particular theme. Often this is a movement skill that serves us as a resource both on and off the dance floor. Examples include: grounding, centring, releasing, activating, settling, moving towards and away... We also focus on particular parts of the body as entry points into our dance.

This is a non-verbal practice where we communicate through our bodies. You have freedom to seek solitude or connection. The classes usually end with a gentle settling phase so we have time to rest and integrate.

TIPS for First-Timers
“Nobody cares if you can’t dance well.
Just get up and dance.
Great dancers are great because of their passion. ”
~ MARTHA GRAHAM
Rest assured there are no moves to learn and nothing you can get wrong.

If you find yourself feeling awkward or self-conscious try:
-
feeling what body parts want to respond to the music and how they want to move.
-
focusing on how your movements feel inside your body, rather than how they look as a ‘dance’.

If you are in need of new movement inspiration, simply look around the room and try-on a move that captures your curiosity.

If it’s your first time come early so we can welcome you and have a chat. The space is ready with music 15mins before class.

All we ask of you is to stay for the full class duration.

Our dance community is warm, inclusive and supportive. We'd love you to join us.
